How nice has the weather been lately? Every year I get so excited at the start of Spring after being deprived of sunshine and daylight. The clocks go forward around the end of March meaning longer days and I especially love the fact that there is still daylight when I leave the office. I find Spring the perfect time to give your makeup a shakeup especially if you have found yourself reaching for the usual suspects day in, day out. I lean much more to towards a lighter coverage and brighter, more vibrant hues. Also I am more conscious of SPF and make sure that I have that covered in my routine.
The look I went for in the photo is a bold but fuss-free lip, barely there eyes and radiant dewy looking skin. To find out how I got this look then keep on reading.
Base
As mentioned above, I usually go for a lighter base like a sheer to light coverage foundation or a tinted moisturiser. Bright sunlight can be very unforgiving. Here I am using the Bourjois 123 Perfect Colour Correcting Cream otherwise known as the CC cream. It’s lightweight but gives enough coverage to even out the complexion and gives a natural, radiant finish that still looks like your own skin. It also has an SPF of 15 so I can safely check sun protection off my list ( I would usually go for a higher SPF if I’m outside for long periods, as we are heading into Summer or if I’m away on holiday in a warm climate). I apply this with my usual choice of foundation brush which is the Real Techniques Buffing Brush from their Core Collection.
Concealer
To conceal the darkness under my eyes from all those late, sleepless nights, I use Rimmel’s Wake Me Up Concealer in the shade True Ivory which is the more yellow toned of the shades they offer and for any redness and blemishes, I like to use Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in the shade Ginger.
Eyes
For eyes, I like to keep it quite neutral and light especially in the daytime and the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette has the perfect selection of shades for this (although any of the Naked palettes would do the job also). Here, I used the shade Suspect over the lid and then the shade Snakebite on the outer third running slightly onto the outer part of the crease. To give my eyes a bit more definition without using a liquid or gel eyeliner, I take a bit of a black eyeshadow like Blackout (also from the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette) on an angled brush and gently run it close to the top lashline predominantly on the outer edge.
I don’t ever go without tight lining my upper water line and I find this is the best trick for creating the illusion of thicker lashes. Currently I am using Maybelline’s Master Drama Cream Eyeliner Pencil in black (although it does transfer a little onto the bottom waterline). Then I go in with several coats of Maybelline Volum’ Express Colossal Waterproof Mascara in black. Recently I’ve also loved using Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in the shade Roach which is a stunning metallic bronze shade. I just line my bottom lash line with it and use a pencil brush like the Mac 219 to slightly smudge it out for a softer look.
Cheeks
For added definition in the cheekbone (or lack of) department and to add a bit of warmth to the face, I like to use a matte bronzer like Benefit’s Hoola under the cheekbones, up the temples and across the hairline, and along the jawline. To create the illusion of a healthy glow, I team it with a blush like Nars Orgasm and then gently dab some of Benefit Watt’s Up along the tops of my cheekbones. I find this to be the perfect highlight as it catches the light beautifully and is not too in-your-face. Benefit Coralista is a great one for doing both jobs, providing a sheer wash of colour to the cheeks whilst also providing the shimmer of a highlight.
Once most of my makeup is on, I take a big fluffy brush like the Real Techniques Powder Brush and powder my t-zone with Rimmel’s Stay Matte Pressed Powder in the shade Transparent. This sets my makeup and keeps it in place whilst also mattifying the centre of of face where I tend to get the most oil.
Lips
Before I apply any lippie, I give my lips a good dose of moisture with the Ren Vita Mineral Lip Balm. Then I go in with a bright, bold colour like this punchy pink from Revlon and it’s the Colourburst Laquer Balm in the shade Vivacious. Crayon lip products are just so easy and are ideal for those that don’t have the time (or the patience) to faff around with lip liners or even a mirror. Plus it keeps the look quite casual and daytime appropriate.
So there you have it. This is a look that you could easily wear in the daytime if you’re feeling bold (or swap the lips for something a bit more sheer like a lipgloss) or even in the evenings (I would probably intensify the eyes a little with a dark kohl pencil smudged on the outer third of the bottom lashline).
