Mac Kit Haul

So recently I had a little bit of a splurge in MAC and I had more than a justified reason for it. I am in the process of building up my makeup kit so that I can hopefully start doing some freelance work on the side. Incase any of you are interested, we were given a list of products we should consider for our kit (from the academy I trained at). I wasn’t obliged to buy anything or everything, but it was a good starting point for me to know what I am likely to need for work as a makeup artist. So if you’re interested to find out what I got for my kit, then keep on reading.
Face & Body Foundation  C2, C4, C6 +White
To start with, I went for Mac Face and Body as it was a foundation I was most familiar with having used it previously and it was the one foundation I used most during the makeup course I took earlier this year at AOFM. Initially with just one layer, this foundation gives a very sheer level of coverage but when layered up, it can be built up to a medium coverage. I went for the second to light shade, a dark shade and the shade in between but aslo the white so I can use it to mix up any colours I need in between. I also opted for the NC range rather than NWs because the yellow undertone is more universally flattering. I do have an NW shade that I bought previously and will use this if I need to, to tone down the yellow for a more neutral undertone.
Pro Conceal and Correct Palette £35.00 Light & Medium
This palette houses four Studio Finish Concealers and two corrector shades. The Light contains NC15, W10, NC20 and NW20 in the concealer shades and a Pale Yellow and Pale Pink corrector shades, whilst the Medium palette contains NC30, NW25. NC35 and NW35 in the concealer shades and Mid Yellow and Mid Peach correctors. All shades can be used on their own or mixed together to achieve the perfect shade for any skintone. It’s an emollient based formulation that is both long wearing and water resistant, and also contains SPF35.
This is a great pick me up for dull, tired looking skin. Said to contains potent botanicals, vitamins and green tea which helps to moisturise and brightens the complexion. It’s formulated with iridescent particles which reflects the light beautifully and gives your face a radiant, lit from within, healthy looking glow. I like to use this mixed in with moisturiser to give the skin a bit more oomph.
This provides a great base with extra hydration whilst also works to control shine. It provides a smooth, even base for foundation to go on to. Said to contain vitamins C and E which helps to protect the skin with antioxidants, and caffeine to help calm and sooth the skin. The results are a beautiful, radiant glow.
This provides a lightweight, barely there finishing powder designed to set your makeup. It helps to control oil and shine whilst it optically minimises the appearance of pores, fine lines and skin imperfections.
Pro longwear concealer £15.50 NW20 and NW30
A medium to full coverage fluid concealer that provides long lasting cover and great for correcting and concealing under the eyes. I wanted to get a light shade and a dark shade to be able to economically mix together any shades I need in between. Originally I picked up NW20 and NW40 but when I got home, I found NW40 waaaaay too dark and with very strong orange-y undertone. So I went back to the store and picked up NW30. I should also point out that I opted for the NW rather than the NC because the NW has more of a pink undertone which is effective in correcting darkness under the eyes which is often blue-ish/green-ish in colour.
Mac Powder Blush in Harmony£18.00
This is a great colour for contouring on some chiselled cheekbones as it has a matte finish and not too orange.
Cream Colour Base in Pearl £15.00
I like to use this as a highlight dabbled gently along the tops of the cheekbones and along the brow bone. It has a pearlescent finish and is able to catch and reflect the light to give off a beautiful, subtle sheen.
Mineralize Skin Finish in Lightscapade £22.00
This is a velvet-soft powder highlight with a frost finish, an alternative to cream highlights and can be also used all over the body for a subtle shimmer effect.
Does what it says on the tin.
Fix Plus  £14.50
This is a vitamin and mineral infused liquid spray with ingredients that help to calm and sooth irritated skin. It gives the skin a boost of radiance and can also be used to set your makeup. I’ve also seen MUAs use Fix Plus to intensify colours e.g. eyeshadows.
Pigment in Vanilla £17.00
Mac Pigments are highly pigmented loose powders which can create a subtle wash of colour or built up for a more intense effect. I chose the shade Vanilla as it makes for a great highlight on the brow bone and also in the tear duct.
Mac eyeshadows are probably one of the best formulations I’ve ever tried. Highly pigmented and so easy to blend. I bought a mix of colours, most of them neutral tones as I anticipate using these more frequently and are the safe options especially if your are just starting out. I will add colours to the mix as and when I find that I need them. The colours I went for are:
Patina
Satin Taupe
Copperplate
Smut
Carbon
Sketch
Nylon
Naked Lunch
Mulch
All That Glitters
Woodwinked
Mystery
I just wanted to mention that the above is just for me to get started and not everything I am likely going to need further down the line. Hence why I haven’t gone crazy and bought everything and in every single shade available. I have also got a lot in my kit already like lipsticks, blushes and mascaras, so the above is just an addition to my kit.
If you’re starting out in a career in makeup or are already working in the industry, let me know what products you have that you consider to be an “essential” to your kit. Also, any economical tips would be more than welcome as makeup is expensive!
